The Hidden Threat to Your Pool Liner: Insect Damage
If I told you insects were causing leaks in your pool liner, you’d probably think I was joking. Believe it or not, insect damage in pool liners is a real issue—and it’s surprisingly common, especially for above-ground pools located in wooded areas. While this problem is less common in inground pools, occurring in about 1 in every 200 pools we inspect, it can still happen, and the consequences can be costly.
How Do Insects Damage Pool Liners?
Insects are persistent creatures, especially when they sense water. Once they figure out there’s water on the other side of that liner, they won’t stop until they chew their way through. This often results in hundreds of tiny pinholes that are not only difficult to find but can eventually render a pool liner beyond repair. And it’s not just liners that are at risk; insects can even chew through flexible PVC piping. When that happens, a simple patch job usually won’t do—pipe replacement is often the only solution.
How to Identify Insect Damage in Your Pool Liner
One way to identify insect damage is by its consistency in location. In inground pools, we always find these tiny holes in similar spots: where the wall meets the floor of the pool or where the wall meets a slope. You’ll often notice small bunches of pinholes filled with sand, a telltale sign of insect activity.
Preventing Insect Damage
While insect damage in inground pools is uncommon, it’s still something pool owners should be aware of. If you know you have a termite problem or any other insect issue in your yard, it’s wise to contact an exterminator and ask them about treating areas around your pool. Most exterminators are familiar with this issue, even if it seems unusual to have insect damage in an inground pool.
